prophecy fulfillment?

"[The second beast] causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, so that no one can buy or sell who does not have the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name."
- Revelation 13:16-17

Some people are wondering if the verichip phenomenon will eventually turn into the fulfillment of the above prophecy. It doesn't seem completely consistent with the prophecy to me, but who knows.

Katherine Albrecht, of Spy Chips, has actually written a book on this subject. The Spychips Threat: Why Christians Should Resist RFID and Electronic Surveillance.

It is easy to imagine a future when all of our financial transactions happen with the aid for microchips in our right hands. Unfortunately, anyone who has every lost their wallet might welcome this convience. Luckily though, it will be a long while before the infrastructure is in place and before people will be willing to give up the anonymity cash so all is not yet lost ;-)

Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to read it yet. I've heard Katherine Albrecht speak before at a conference and she is relatively reactionary so I get the impression the her book is really concerned with getting more people on to her side of the RFID debate.

As I meant to allude to before, I think it will be a while before such an thing will become the mark of the beast. I believe it would require a paradigm shift in American values before chips become a requirement to conduct business in this country.
